One of the most renowned streets in the UK, London Oxford Street Christmas lights are set to light up the capital city again this festive season! The official switch on for these lights is one of the biggest in the world and attracts thousands of spectators each year, both for the big turn on and then simply to see the lights in all their glory throughout the Christmas period! The lights are turned on outside the world famous Selfridges department store. The event is always headlined by a host of popular celebrities. This year’s line-up includes Jessie J and X Factor winner James Arthur! There will be live music and entertainment throughout the evening and it will be a magical way start the festive countdown.

When: Friday 8th November, 2012 from 7pm

Who:James Arthur and The Vamps

Added Extras: Faye Tozer of Steps fame, Joey, the life-size puppet horse of hit show War Horse and winners of Britain’s got Talent Ashleigh and Pudsey.

Considered one of the biggest parties in the North West, the Manchester City Christmas Lights will be switched on and light up the city for the next 6 weeks! On top of all the amazing celebrity guests joining the party, there will be a 10 minute firework extravaganza! The show will also be shown on big screens in Exchange Square and Spinningfields!

When: Sunday 24th November 2013, 2:30pm – 5pm

Who: Sir Chris Hoy

Edinburgh is a magical city, especially at Christmas! The theme for the opening ceremony of the festive season and the big light switch on is The Twelve Days of Christmas. It’s an interactive, all singing all dancing spectacular show which is not to be missed! Special guest host and six time Olympic champion cyclist, Sir Chris Hoy, will have the honours of illuminating the city this year! This fantastic community event will consist of over 60 schools and community groups with a total of 850 performers! The event culminates with the switch on of the lights attended by the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh and will feature performances from Edinburgh Salvation Army Band and finally end with a spectacular firework display.


Where: Newcastle, Grey Street

When: Thursday 21st November, From 5:30pm

Who: Capital FM and ex-Newcastle United Legend Steve Harper

This year’s light switch on in Newcastle promises to be as memorable as ever as Capital FM’s Matt & JoJo will be joined by Newcastle United legend Steve Harper who recently ended his 18 year run as goal keeper with the club. Joining these will also be the winners of the annual Children’s Christmas Light competition who’s winning designs are currently being made and will be showcased on Nelson Street throughout the festive period – a perfect way to get kids and the community involved with the event and a fitting start to the Christmas period!


Where: Cardiff, City Centre

When: Thursday 14th November 2013, From 4:30pm

Who: A magical array of Characters including Santa himself!

Cardiff is the place to be for the turning on the Christmas Lights this year. There is a whole host of entertainment and appearances from a variety of acts. Yojojo and Lau Lau from Waybuloo will be a favourite for the kids! There will be a parade involving Santa and his Reindeer and a Santa’s Grotto. There will be live open air music and Christmas markets. The light switch on in Cardiff marks the opening of Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland on City Hall Lawn, which features an amazing open air ice rink!
