Artificial Christmas Trees - PE or PVC?

Choosing an Artificial Christmas Tree can always be a difficult decision with so many sizes, shapes and styles to choose from. Where do you start?

Like many items it is worth investing in a good quality artificial tree which can last for up to 15 years. (Remember that the tree will need to be un-packed from its box, built up, decorated and then put back into its box at least 15 times during its lifespan).

Begin with working out where the tree is going to go, this will determine what space you have available both from a height and width perspective. If you are planning on adding lights to the tree please also bear in mind how far the nearest electrical socket is. (With battery powered Christmas lights you may not need to be near any electrical socket).

The design of the tree is also important; typically there are two types of artificial tree.

  • Hooked artificial trees – this is where branches need to be individually hooked onto the trees main trunk and are normally colour coded or numbered. Hooked trees do normally take longer to erect.
  • Hinged artificial trees – these have the branches attached to the trunk and simply fold down into position making assembling a hinged tree hassle free. In many cases with hinged trees you can also leave the lights on the tree at the end of each festive season - just simply remove the decorations!

Over the past couple of years more and more Christmas tree manufacturers are opting for hinged trees as this seems to now be the customers preferred choice.

Artificial Christmas trees are also made from a variety of materials depending on your budget this Christmas.

Budget trees tend to be manufactured from PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) which is pressed into thin sheets then cut into thin needle like strands which form the branches and needles on the tree.

Many of our premium trees are now made from PE or a mixture of PE and PVC. PE (Poly Ethylene) is used in an injection moulding system to form realistic branches and tree needles. These denser/thicker PE needles have a more realistic look as opposed to flat needles on PVC trees.

We have one of the largest ranges of Artificial Christmas Trees online with both PVC Christmas Trees and PE Christmas Trees.
