Which Is Your Favourite - Christmas Films

As the festive season draws in closer there are many things that get us feeling all Christmassy, whether it’s the chilly weather making us wrap up warm, festive scented candles, making your Christmas cake, dark nights or starting the Christmas shopping, for us here at UK Christmas World, we think it’s one of the nicest times of the year!

When Christmas comes around we all have our favourite traditions, things to do, the songs we play and movies we watch, in this blog we have shared some of these, do you agree, are these your favourites too? We have complied a list of what we think are the nation‘s top Christmas films, and a little bit about them!

 

  1. Elf

Starring Will Ferrell, James Caan and Zooey Deschanel this festive flick was released in November 2003 and on the opening night the box office brought in $31,113,501 and is definitely a family favourite particularly around Christmas that adults and children alike can enjoy.

 

  1. The Polar Express

Following the magical adventure of a boy who boards a train to the North Pole, this movie was released in December 2004. Starring Tom Hanks, Nona Gaye and Peter Scolari this is the perfect film to share with your family, particularly on Christmas Eve!

 

  1. It’s a Wonderful Life

Released in 1947 this classic movie follows the tale of an angel who helps a frustrated businessman see what life would be like if he never existed. Starring James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore this movie brought in £49,845 on opening night.

  1. Miracle on 34th Street

A lawyer and a little girl must prove that a man claiming to be Santa Claus is the real thing in this 1994 remake of a classic. This movie stars Richard Attenborough, Elizabeth Perkins and Dylan McDermott and is a perfect Christmassy tale for all the family to enjoy!

  1. The Snowman

Probably one of the most popular and well known Christmas movies that is bound to be on main TV channels every Christmastime. The Snowman book was first published in 1978 and the television representation was then shown in 1982. It is a 25 minute feature told with action, music and pictures. It was a great success and was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film.

  1. Home Alone

This 1990 flick stars Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern and is the well-known tale of the boy who has to protect his home from burglars when he is accidentally left at home from a Christmas family holiday. This movie is certainly a favourite for over the festive period in particular saw the box office making over $4476,000,000 when it was released!

  1. A Christmas Carol

A true classic in the Christmas movie world, there have been many adaptations of the story which was originally a book. The first film released in 1901 is the earliest surviving screen adaptation and was only about 5 minutes in length!  Since the first release there have been many adaptations including ‘Scrooge’ in 1935 starring Seymour Hicks, Mickey’s Christmas Carol from Walt Disney, A Muppet Christmas Carol, A Christmas Carol in 1999 starring Patrick Stewart, - perhaps one of the most well-known versions, and most recently ‘A Christmas Carol’ in 2009 which was an animated adaptation starring Jim Carrey.


  1. The Grinch

This is a classic festive film from December 2000 is particularly popular with families. It is the story of the creature who intends to steal Christmas. It stars Jim Carey as The Grinch and Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who, the little girl who befriends the Grinch and who is determined Christmas will stay in Whoville. Gather the family around this Christmas and share this fun movie with them all, it really is a great one for all ages.

 

 

  1. The Santa Clause

Starring Tim Allen as Scott Calvin and Santa Claus, this great family flick is the perfect way to bring in the Christmas spirit. We follow the story of a man who accidentally kills Santa on Christmas Eve, and magically finds himself set to take to replace him. Released in December 1995 this family comedy will definitely be a hit with both young and old this Christmas.

 

  1. Arthur Christmas

This 2011 animated comedy is a popular Christmas film especially with children. Santa’s clumsy son Arthur gets put on a mission with St. Nick’s father to give out a present they missed out to a young girl. Starring James McAvoy as Arthur and Jim Broadbent as Santa it is one that will certainly bring all the family together on a cold winters evening and put everyone in the Christmas spirit, and even have a giggle or two!
